Our Schedule is Heating Up as September Approaches!
September is getting close, and the Troop is getting busy! We have a lot going on in the next few weeks, and I hope you can join us at these activities!
The Panther Patrol is camping over this Friday-Saturday and finishing up a number of requirements for camping merit badge. Contact LT for more information about this campout!
As noted by Mr. Dover earlier today, the Troop will be facilitating a fundraiser for all the boys in the Troop beginning on Saturday, August 22. The boys of the Troop will be distributing the Russell Country Phone Book and boys that participate will earn 25 cents per book delivered. A number of boys in the Troop have negative amounts in their Scout account, and participating in this fundraiser is a great way to earn a significant amount of money to pay for your Scouting activities.
Here is Mr. Dover’s message:
Hello all. Sorry for the short notice but there is a phenomenal fund raising opportunity this Saturday August 22d. We will be meeting at 9:00 am 2224 Vaughn Road (in Great Falls near Great Falls ReadyMix) to pick up phone books, please wear your class A uniforms and be ready to work. The goal is to earn at least $200 per scout ($180 for the scout account $20 for the troop), which would mean that each scout would deliver 800 phone books (just deliver them to the steps of the house) in the course of about a week. I figured if we all met on Saturday morning, picked up our routes and books and headed out together, we could work together to get neighborhoods completed with the least amount of cars possible. Please contact Dwight at 231-4251 or dwightdover to let me know if you can attend, I think this is a very easy way to earn money and dig our way out of the deficit that many of us are in. If another day works better, let me know and we can arrange getting you some books and doing the delivery later in the week.
The Rotary Club has asked the Boy Scouts for a Good Turn on Sunday, August 23. They were using an aerial drone to take photographs of Camp Rotary near Monarch, and that drone lost satellite signal and crashed. The club would like the Scouts to perform some “search and rescue” to find it. If you would like to participate, please meet me at Camp Rotary between 9:30 am and 10am on Sunday, August 23. The Rotary Club will provide lunch and your time spent (including travel there and back) will count towards your service hours for rank advancement. If you can join us, please call, email or text me so that I can make sure that the Club has enough food.
Our August Court of Honor will be next Monday, August 24 at 6pm behind the Scout Office, 824 17th Avenue South. The court of honor will also be a potluck dinner. Everyone should please bring a main dish to share. Panther Patrol members should also bring a salad or side dish. Troll Patrol members should also bring a dessert. Ghost patrol members should bring an entree and either a salad, side dish or dessert at their choosing. Please invite your family to come and join us at this farewell to the Summer!
We will be screening the movie “October Sky” (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0132477/) after the potluck. October Sky is the true story of Homer Hickam, a coal miner’s son that was inspired by the Sputnik launch to take up an interest in rocketry and eventually became a NASA engineer. It is a great movie, and those that view the movie will complete requirement #5 of the Citizenship in the Community merit badge (https://www.scoutbook.com/mobile/references/boy-scouting/merit-badges/citizenship-in-the-community-merit-badge-requirements.asp).
Our Troop Calendar conference will be August 31 at 6pm at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1226 1st Avenue North. The Troop will be providing everyone a hot-dog dinner so that you can attend this meeting. Please bring all of your family, school, sports, hunting and other calendars to this meeting so that we can try to avoid as many conflicts as possible! This will also be our September Patrol Leader’s Conference.
Finally, please mark your calendar for these September Troop events:
* Lewis and Clark District Scout Show, September 12 at the Fairgrounds. We will be building a trebuchet.
* Eric Abarr Eagle Project, weekend of September 12-13
* Lewis and Clark and Prickly Pear District Fall Camporee, weekend of September 18-20 near Wolf Creek
* September 26, Popcorn Sale begins
Have a great Scouting week! I look forward to seeing you all this weekend and at our Court of Honor on Monday.
Yours in Scouting,
